Heinrich Heine married Eugenie Mirat, a saleswoman in a Parisian boot shop. She was uneducated, foolish, and vain. Heine’s affection for her did not preclude an awareness of her shortcomings. At his death he left her his whole estate on condition that she marry again, “because then there will be at least one man who will regret my death.”
